Helping Soldiers is Just the Beginning

Integrative Restoration (iRest) is Helping Returning Soldiers at Walter Reed Army Hospital.  So Many Other People Can Benefit.  We Are Gathering Their Stories.

One Soldier's Story
A soldier, let's call him Michael, returns from Afghanistan-Iraq, depressed, traumatized, suffering profoundly. He finds himself part of a study at Walter Reed Army Hospital, the feasibility of yoga to relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. He can’t believe it, but in his words, “your yoga really works.” Walter Reed decides to fund a further study of Richard Miller’s Integral Self Restoration (iRest) or Yoga Nidra, which he has derived from his 30 years of work as a clinical psychologist and yoga scholar. Michael was lucky to stumble on this program and find relief from anxiety, sleeplessness, and feeling out of control. So many soldiers come back feeling the same way.  And how many other populations are out there. . . homeless, elderly, adolescents, chronic pain.  The list could go on and on.

What did Walter Reed Army Hospital think?

The initial feasibility study went well enough for Walter Reed to greenlight the next stage, a $500,000 study.  Also one of the clinics has made iRest an integral part of their 3-week rotation.  Soldiers receive nine iRest sessions as part of their treatment.  See the published report on the preliminary study at clinicaltrials.gov.

Vets with PTSD Say about iRest:

  • "Your yoga really works!”
  • “...I didn’t want it to end…”
  • “I’m experiencing life ...not just living it”
  • “...I feel more accepting of situations in my life that I cannot control…”
  • “It’s easier to get to sleep now ...and I sleep longer”
  • “...it’s empowering knowing you can change the way you feel & your mood.”

What is iRest?
It’s a practice developed by a clinical psychologist with thirty years of experience synthesizing modern psychology and ancient meditative practices. It is a non-dogmatic, non-religious, secular practice that is well suited for our Western culture. It is a guided meditation usually practiced while lying down. Physically, it induces deep relaxation. Emotionally, it helps participants recognize and release dysfunctional habitual patterns. On a physical, emotional and spiritual level it leads to the experience of unshakeable peace that remains during even the most difficult situations.

iRest is a profoundly transformative practice that leads to lasting psychological, physical and spiritual healing. It accomplishes this through two parallel approaches: the release of long-held negative beliefs that give rise to self-destructive patterns and direct pointing to the realization of one’s true nature through self-inquiry.

The goal of iRest is to teach participants to embody a skill that they can use throughout their lives to assist them in experiencing a sense of mastery when encountering difficult situations, and a sense of joy that pervades their everyday life.

Our Vision

To build and sustain a diverse community devoted to promoting the expansion of Richard Miller's iRest Yoga Nidra protocol in the Chicago area. Our goal is to encourage education and continuing support of teachers, research and the introduction of iRest into many and various populations, as it may organically unfold.
